Dr. Ron Blakey's paleogeographic reconstruction of the southwestern U.S. during the Mississippian Period. Utah was completely covered by a shallow, warm sea. Lime and mud were accumulating, thousands of meters thick, in the ocean basin. These chemical sediments were eventually buried and cemented to form the resistant cliff-forming rocks in Rock Canyon.
