College Awards

Questar Scholarship

To be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate. This award is based on need and must be nominated by a faculty member.

Leany Scholarship

This scholarship is available to students with a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher. The candidate must be registered for 12 or more hours per semester and work a minimum of 10 hours per week to support themselves.

Carl Christiansen Scholarship

This scholarship is available to students with a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and is based on need. This scholarship is by nomination only.

Department Awards

New graduate students are eligible for department scholarships, and teaching or research assistantships on a competitive basis. Most regular degree-seeking students receive some form of financial aid. However, none may expect financial assistance from the department for more than four semesters.
Graduate students are also encouraged to seek additional support from industries and agencies outside the Department of Geological Sciences. Such requests must be submitted to the department chair, who will forward them with a supporting letter.

George Hansen Scholarship

This award is available to incoming freshmen who enroll as geology, environmental geology, or earth and space science education. This fellowship is awarded separately from University-wide scholarships and usually covers a significant portion.

Johnson Fellowship

This award is available to students majoring in geology for use during their junior and/or senior years or during their graduate work. To be eligible for consideration, potential recipients must be citizens of either the United States or Canada and have maintained a 3.0 grade point average in their university work.

Geology Alumni Scholarship

To be awarded to either graduate or undergraduate students. Scholarship selection will be based on need and academic qualification. This award is to be used primarily for tuition.

Warren Van Pelt Scholarship

Both undergraduate and graduate students may apply for this scholarship. However, it is restricted to students who are specializing in vertebrate paleontology.

Michael J. Harvey, Jr. Scholarship

To be awarded to graduate or undergraduate students of proven ability.

Phelps Dodge Scholarship

To be awarded to graduate or undergraduate students who have financial need. Applicant must be enrolled in classes which promote or foster mining such as engineering, geology, metallurgy, and materials science.

Harold Bissell Scholarship

No restrictions

K. Anthony Snow Scholarship

Graduate or undergraduate student with demonstrated need.

Revell Phillips Scholarship

To be awarded to an outstanding geology student at any level.

Ken & Anne Bullock Scholarship

Preference will be given to a graduate specializing in petrology, mineralogy, or economic geology.

Virgil V. & Audrey H. Peterson Scholarship

To be awarded to a Junior, Senior, or Graduate student majoring in Geology. Applicant must be committed to complete their education, abide by the honor code and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA. Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need.

C. Bryant & Clara C. Copley Scholarship

To be awarded to a female undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Geology, who demonstrates scholastic ability by maintaining a GPA of at least 3.0 and excellent aptitude in their major field. They must be committed to completing their education and abide by the moral code of BYU. If in any year a qualified female student is not available, the award can be given to a male student that year.

Lyle A. Hale Scholarship

To be awarded to a graduate student with excellent aptitude in their major field.
Preference will be given to students who demonstrate financial need.

Geology Faculty Scholarship

To be awarded to a graduate student with an especially good academic record and one who has demonstrated need.
