This satellite image of the Bahamas island of Eleuthera in the Atlantic Ocean shows a shallow marine environment that is currently producing limestone. Notice the plumes of lighter material. This is a carbonate factory in process. These same conditions existed in Utah during the Mississippian Period to form the massive limestone layers we see in Rock Canyon. (NASA Space Shuttle image)
