The Ophir Shale

The Ophir Formation is a brown to olive-colored rock. Within the formation are some phyllitic shale, shaley limestone, and some quartzite and phyllite in the lower sections. The rock has a characteristic shine to it, due to the great amount of mica. This rock also weathers easily and forms slopes or valleys Rock Canyon. (photo by Bill Harris)
