What is Mentored Research?

Mentored research is the opportunity for students to gain firsthand experience with exciting original research projects. Students and professors work together to lead scientific projects and make new discoveries. All students are invited to participate in mentored research!

How Do I Apply?

You should chat with your preferred research mentor to express your interest. You can also complete the Geology Undergraduate Research Assistant Application Form. Upon completing the online form, your application is then sent out to all faculty.

Do NOT begin working until you receive the authorization email from Teresa Harper, Kathy Lee Garrett, or Kate Peterson.

Pay Rate Policy

Pay Range: $10.75 - $22.50

Your hourly rate is determined by a variety of factors including job description and difficulty, as well as student merit and experience.

Increases

Students have multiple opportunities to earn pay increases based on time in the position (longevity) and job performance (merit).

Longevity Increase

You can receive up to .25 increase per year for longevity in your current position.
Ask your supervisor for a longevity increase after one year of working in your position. Your supervisor will then submit via email the increase request to the department manager to process.

Merit Increase

You can receive up to 2.00 increase per year for merit.
If your supervisor believes your performance is exceptional, they can submit via email the increase request to the department manager to process. Please note that a 2.00 is incredibly rare.
