Miaja Coombs is a freshman in the Department of Geological Sciences. She grew up in Alaska and spends as much time as she can outdoors, skiing, rock climbing, and trail running.
Growing up she would go hiking and trail running in areas carved by glaciers like the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. She loved running through areas where two glaciers had converged so there were still remnants of ice. This sparked her interest in glaciers and led her to become a geology major. Moving forward she wants to study glacier lake outburst floods.
Miaja loves being a geology major at BYU because of how close the students and faculty are. She enjoys the vast variety of topics to study in geology. She encourages everyone who finds joy in spending time outdoors, to take a geology class. If studying the earth and its origins interests you, geology may be your ideal major!
