Meet Professor John McBride

Education

  • B.S. Math and Geology, University of Arkansas Fayetteville, 1978
  • M.S. Geology, University of Arkansas Fayetteville, 1980
  • Ph.D. Geophysics, Cornell University, 1987

Professional Background

John H. McBride obtained a B.S. in Mathematics and Geology from the University of Arkansas in 1978, and in 1980 an M.S. in Geology from the same institution with a thesis based on magnetic intensity and gravity field methods. He obtained a Ph. D. in geological sciences in 1987 from Cornell University, while working on a variety of topics centered around geophysical applications. John also studied paleobiology at the University of Chicago (1980-1981). For a total of about four years, he was employed by the petroleum industry (Amoco International Oil Co. and Shell Offshore, Inc) working largely with geophysical data in a variety of international and domestic settings. Previous to joining Brigham Young University, he held a position for 6½ years (1995-2002) with the Illinois State Geological Survey where he attained the rank of Senior Geophysicist. From 1990-1995, he was on the research faculty at the University of Cambridge working with the British Institutions Reflection Profiling Syndicate.

Currently, John is a professor in Geological Sciences at BYU. His research experience includes acquiring, processing, and interpreting geophysical data, particularly waveform data. He specializes in applying seismic reflection methods to the study of the structure, composition, and deformation history of the earth’s crust and upper mantle. A major research focus is the constraining of carbon sequestration planning using industrial seismic reflection data in the Illinois Basin. Geological hazards-related work is centered around landslides, active faults, and contaminated aquifers. Additional interests include applying ground-penetrating radar methods to various geological problems (e.g., glacier dynamics; Quaternary calcium carbonate environments) and to the study of LDS Church History sites (e.g., Nauvoo, Illinois and Far West, Missouri). Whenever possible, McBride prefers working in the field with students and faculty, as opposed to being restricted indoors. Since joining BYU in 2002, John has participated in field geophysical programs with BYU students in Utah, Arizona, Nevada, California, Hawaii, Wyoming, Idaho, Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, and Florida. Sites of international field studies include Bahamas, Italy, Switzerland, and Czech Republic.
