PE Limited Donates MOVE Software Suite to BYU Department of Geological Sciences

The BYU Department of Geological Sciences is excited to announce a generous donation from PE Limited of their MOVE software suite, valued at $2,764,444.11.

This cutting-edge kinematic software will significantly enhance research and teaching within the department. MOVE will be integrated into upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses focusing on geologic mapping technology and tectonics, providing students and faculty with industry-leading tools to enhance their skills and research capabilities.

Dr. Ron Harris hopes to utilize MOVE in his Structural Geology (GEOL 375) and Tectonics (GEOL 575) courses. Graduate students working with Dr. Harris and others in the department are using the MOVE suite to construct balanced cross sections and 3D structural models in various tectonic settings, including Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and throughout the western United States.

Dr. Harris and students study structural geology and research tectonics throughout Utah, Nevada, California, Indonesia, Timor-Leste, and many more places around the world

MOVE enables users to restore deformed strata to their undeformed state or simulate sequential deformation to visualize the development of faults and folds over time. The suite offers comprehensive tools for building, balancing, restoring, and analyzing cross-sections on local and regional scales. Additionally, it allows the creation of detailed 3D models integrating surface and subsurface geology. Advanced modules within MOVE support isostatic, fracture, and fault response modeling, as well as fault and stress analysis.

The department extends its utmost gratitude to PE Limited for their generous contribution, which will elevate the educational and research experiences of current and future students.
