Campo del Cielo Meteorite Fragment
This is a fragment of the Campo del Cielo meteorite from Argentina. The Campo fall occurred about 4,500 years ago. It is mostly iron, with small amounts of nickel and cobalt.
Iron meteorites, like the one we have at the Museum, represent the cores of large asteroids that broke apart when they entered Earth’s atmosphere because of how fast they were traveling.

Gancedo (shown above), the largest known Campo del Cielo fragment, is among the largest meteorite fragments ever discovered, weighing more than 30 tons!
