Here is one more example of a habit for malachite. If you were to cut these stalactites perpendicular to their length, you would find concentric rings - coatings one atop another. Although malachite is a fairly soft mineral at 3.54 on the Mohs scale, it is nonetheless fairly widely used in jewelry. The ease with which it might scratch if not treated carefully is trumped by the beauty of the concentric and often convoluted rings beautifully polished.
